What can you Expect from Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is able to alter the shape and size of a patient’s nose. This procedure is also commonly referred to as a nose job and it involves the modification of the bones, cartilage and skin of the nose. Patients often consider rhinoplasty because they are unhappy with the appearance of their noses. Some might feel that their nose is too big or that it does not match the shape of their face. This procedure is indeed able to address these issues, but it can also be performed to improve the nasal functions of individuals. Patients with breathing problems and those that have experienced trauma to their nose could see these issues resolved by the surgery.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

The bridge of the nose is made up of bone with the lower part of the nose consisting of mostly cartilage. Rhinoplasty does not have a standard procedure as each patient’s needs can be quite different. This means that each surgery is customised to a certain degree, in order to achieve results that are specific to each patient. The procedure can be performed from within the nose opening or by making a small incision at the base of the nose.

Depending on the desired result, a surgeon will usually alter the shape of either the nasal bones or cartilage and in some cases both, to change the shape and structure of the nose. Surgeons might have to use bone and cartilage from different areas of the body if there is not enough material available in the nose to complete the procedure.

Rhinoplasty Consultation

The consultation with your doctor before rhinoplasty will be quite extensive because of the dynamic nature of the surgery. A patient that is experiencing trouble breathing due to a deviated septum will require a procedure that is slightly different from someone that wants to reduce the size of their nose. This is why it is important to be specific about your expected results during your consultation, to ensure that your doctor is able to properly plan their approach to the surgery.

The surgeon will take your wishes into consideration and assess your facial structure to develop a customised surgery plan which will deliver results that complement the other facial features. Your medical history and physical health will play a large role in determining whether or not you are a suitable candidate for surgery and honesty is essential during consultations with your doctor.
